Critique of MCC Health Sciences-Fitness Center Finds, Suit ...

A statement for the McHenry County College Board from Stephen Willson is found below.? Willson is the man who punched holes big enough to drive a bulldozer through the billion dollar (with interest) proposal to completely revamp the MCC campus over the next forty years.

As one of the ?Founders? of MCC, I?m still wondering why McHenry County College?s Board stopped using the Woodstock North High School culinary facility and built its own in Crystal Lake. The prior arrangement seemed like wonderful synergy.

He pointed out that there are fewer third graders in McHenry County schools than seniors, which means the 3% annual growth rate assumed by college officials was apparently picked out of thin air.

Now Willson analyses the plan to build was appears to be mainly a nursing training facility, plus occupational, physical and respiratory therapy,? And, oh, yes.? Twenty-eight percent of the building will be for a fitness center to compete with private enterprise.

Remarks concerning the MCC Health Sciences Facility

Northwest Herald, October 17, 2012, ?MCC envisions partners for health sciences facility?

?McHenry County College is looking to expand its health and wellness programs with a $42 million building and is looking to private-sector partners to help pay for it.?

The college?s board of trustees will vote on a second-phase feasibility study Oct. 25. The study, if approved, will examine whether a public-private partnership will work to create a health sciences facility. It will look into possible sites for a building and identify potential financial partners and funding sources.

College officials maintain that a public-private partnership ? specifically partnerships with those in the health care field ? would pay for the project without going to voters or raising tuition.

?I?m not saying we would never, but none of the discussions this far have addressed [a tuition increase], as well as a referendum,? said Laura Brown, the college?s vice president of institutional advancement. ?We are not going to a referendum.?

?Any private entity has to augment or supplement our educational focus,? Brown said.

For the college?s share of the partnership, it could leverage debt or employ alternative revenue bonds to be repaid with revenues generated by the project ? namely from tuition from an estimated 1,400 new students and 25,000 incremental credit hours each year.

Additionally, students taking health sciences programs likely would see additional classroom fees.

A phase one study concluded that expanding those programs ? specifically occupational, physical and respiratory therapy, and other health and wellness curriculum ? would require a 120,000-square-foot building, 67 percent of which would be used for classroom spaces and 28 percent for a fitness center.

If the board approves the phase two study, it will hire Addison-based firm Power Wellness for $50,000. The board asked Power Wellness also to explore existing buildings and facilities in the county as potential sites for the expansion.

Fact 1.? There is no demand for a program of this size.

Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that there are approximately 350 job openings annually in the ?health care and social assistance? sector in McHenry County.

This includes jobs that require an advance degree, such as doctors and registered nurses, and jobs that do not require any degree, and jobs in the ?social assistance? subsector.

So the annual number of job openings in the health care field in McHenry County that will require a two-year degree is probably half of this, or about 175.

As it is possible to obtain a two-year degree at other institutions in the area and as the job force is fairly mobile, the number of annual job openings available to graduates of the proposed program is probably no more than 100.

Yet MCC projects that they will have 1,400 students in this program, or 700 graduating per year.

If they are correct, then this program is a cruel hoax on the students who enroll expecting to be able to find jobs in health care in McHenry County, as only perhaps one in seven will find a job.

Fact 2. The program cannot be self-supporting.

Assume the College is correct and the program generates 25,000 incremental credit hours. At the current tuition rate of $90 per credit hour, the gross annual revenue would be $2.25 million.

But the annual mortgage payment on a $42 million is $2.7 million or 120% of the projected tuition. This is before one teacher is hired or the electric bill is paid.

MCC, like most schools, spends about 67% of its budget on personnel and less than 10% on mortgage payments. Thus, less than 20% of tuition money, or perhaps $450,000, would be available to pay the $2.7 million mortgage payment.

Fact 3.? 28% of the building is for a health club.

There are more than 20 health clubs in McHenry County now. It does not make sense for MCC to build yet another taxpayer subsidized competitor for local private businesses.

Fact 4.? $42 million divided by 120,000 square feet is $350 per square foot.

This makes MCC twice as fiscally responsible as the Crystal Lake Library, but this is still more than three times the going rate for finished commercial space.

Fact 5. MCC plans to use ?alternate revenue bonds? in order to avoid a referendum.

This law was written so that municipalities could obtain lower interest rates on borrowings for utilities with proven track records, such as water and sewer systems, NOT speculative projects such as this.

I know because I was on the advisory committee that helped to write this legislation.

If MCC seeks to use a loophole to do an end run around the voters and burden the taxpayers, I personally will lead the effort to put the bond issue on the ballot.

Further, I will personally fund a class action suit on behalf of the taxpayers alleging fraud in the issuance of such bonds because there is no institution, no corporation, that will be willing to enter into a 30 year contract to guarantee revenues sufficient to pay for this building.

I will sue MCC?s attorney if he issues an opinion that such bonds are legally issued.

I will sue bond counsel for concurring in such an opinion.

I will sue the financial advisor, the feasibility consultant, and the underwriter.

So, in conclusion, I urge the Board NOT to waste more taxpayer money by giving $50,000 to yet another consultant who is hired to deliver

  • a pre-determined,
  • made-as-instructed,

endorsement of this speculative white elephant.

Three new crew arrive at space station with fish

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Oct 25, 2012 7:15pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - A pair of rookie Russian cosmonauts and a veteran U.S. astronaut arrived at the International Space Station on Thursday, boosting the crew back to full strength and bringing along 32 Japanese medaka fish.

Soyuz spacecraft commander Oleg Novitskiy, flight engineer Evgeny Tarelkin and NASA's Kevin Ford ended a two-day journey with an 8:29 a.m. EDT (1229 GMT) docking at the orbital outpost as the ships sailed 254 miles above the planet.

After making sure seals between the two spacecraft were airtight, the men joined space station commander Sunita Williams, Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko to return the station to its full, six-member crew.

The $100 billion station, a project of 15 nations, had had a crew of three onboard since September 16 because of normal rotation schedules.

"It is so great to see all six of you on orbit and to see your smiling faces," William Gerstenmaier, NASA associate administrator for spaceflight, radioed to the crew from the Russian mission control near Moscow.

The 33rd space station crew blasted off on Tuesday aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Ford, who flew as the pilot on a 2009 space shuttle mission, said he noticed different noises and vibrations riding on the Soyuz, but he found the trip just as enjoyable.

"The two days went really quickly," Ford told family and friends gathered at the Russian mission control during a televised welcoming ceremony. "It was an incredible ride."

Ford's Russian colleagues, both of whom are flying for the first time, had a bit of struggle adjusting to the weightless environment of space.

"I have to admit it was a little bit difficult the first day, but then it got better and easier," one of the cosmonauts said through a translator.

"It got tolerable," the other added. "Today, we're feeling great."

One of the first orders of business was transferring 32 Japanese medaka fish from special containers aboard the Soyuz into Japan's Kibo laboratory, where aquariums have been set up for a variety of experiments.

"The fish are still alive. Aki already has checked on them. He was very worried that they make it here," one of the cosmonauts said, referring to Hoshide.

The crew will have a busy schedule in the coming days. On Sunday, the privately owned Dragon cargo ship, which arrived at the station on October 10, is due to depart.

The Space Exploration Technologies' freighter, making the first of 12 supply runs under a $1.6 billion NASA contract, will be returning with more than one ton (907 kg) of science experiments and gear from the orbital outpost, the first big load of cargo to come back to Earth since the space shuttles stopped flying more than a year ago.

The astronauts also are preparing for the arrival of a Russian cargo ship on Wednesday and a spacewalk the following day by Williams and Hoshide to try to repair a leak in a station cooling system.

Williams, Hoshide and Malenchenko are scheduled to return to Earth on November 12, leaving the three newcomers on their own until replacements arrive on December 21.

What is a Good Society? Taxation and Happiness ? SPSP

by Shige Oishi, University of Virginia

Image courtesy of Arvind Balaraman / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

What is a good society? What is an ideal society? Every four years, the presidential election makes Americans think of this philosophical question. In the end, the choice of president reflects which America is the ideal America: the (pseudo-) meritocratic, winner-take-all, ?strong? America or the egalitarian, ?compassionate? America.

One of the central debates to this end is concerned with taxation: who should pay and how much? President Obama thinks that the rich should pay more, whereas Governor Romney does not. Beyond the rhetoric of ?tax relief? versus ?tax cut?, there is one fundamental aspect missing from the debate on taxation: namely, what is the purpose of taxation to begin with?

Of course, the main purpose of taxation is to pay for public and common goods. In a modern society, residents expect to have access to clean water and air, reliable roads, primary education, parks and green space, personal safety, and services such as garbage pick-up, sewage disposal, and recycling. The government, both local and federal, is responsible for the basic infrastructure, so that its citizens can live healthy lives.

Even a libertarian might agree that people?s quality of life would suffer if residents do not have reliable police, clean water, safe roads, good schools, or garbage pick-up and recycling, and that public and common goods are necessary. Ultimately, then, the optimal taxation system is the system that allows the society to function well, while minimizing the burden (tax) to its citizens.

One way we can decide what the taxation system is optimal is to measure the quality of public and common goods across various societies with different taxation systems, and identify the tax system that maximizes the quality of public and common goods. Where do you see the best public transportation, public education, public space, and social welfare?

Another way to address the issue of the best taxation policy is to see which citizens are the happiest. If the taxation is to provide good public and common goods to citizens, and if providing good public and common goods is important to the quality of citizens? lives, then we might as well measure citizen?s perceived quality of life directly, and identify the taxation system in which citizens are the most satisfied with their lives in general.

Uli Schimmack (U of Toronto), Ed Diener (U of Illinois), and I took the latter approach, and examined whether a certain taxation policy was associated with the happiness of the nations. Considering the main political debate has been between progressive taxation (the rich pays the higher rate of tax) and flat taxation (everyone pays the same rate of tax), we examined the relation between the degree of progressive taxation and the average happiness of citizens across 54 nations (see Oishi, Schimmack, & Diener, 2012, Psychological Science for details).

The bottom line: The residents of the nations with more progressive taxation were happier than those of the nations with less progressive taxation. The correlation coefficient was non-trivial: r = .33 with general life satisfaction and r = .46 with daily positive experiences (e.g., enjoying, smiling, doing something interesting, feeling well-rested).

The nations with the most progressive taxation among the 54 nations were Sweden (the top income bracket?s tax rate is 57%, whereas the lowest income bracket?s tax rate is 0%, i.e., a 57% difference), the Netherlands (52% difference), and Japan (45% difference).? The U.S. ranked #34 among 54 nations with 20% difference (the top income bracket rate is 35%, the lowest is 15%). The nations with the least progressive taxation were Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia and other countries that have flat tax rates. The first observation is that rich Americans do not pay as much as rich Swedish, Dutch, or Japanese people in absolute terms as well as relative terms (relative to non-rich). So, the argument that rich Americans are already paying too much seems inaccurate ?at least from a global perspective.

Some might worry that the ?official? tax rate is different from the ?actual? tax rate (the tax that residents actually pay after various deductions). We checked, therefore, the ?effective? tax rate (published by OECD, which is close to the ?actual? tax rate). The results were virtually the same (r = .36 with general life satisfaction, r = .46 with daily positive experiences).

Of course, the above correlations are, well, simple correlations. Thus, third variables could account for this association. To our surprise, however, progressive taxation was not associated with GDP per capita (r = .15) or income inequality, Gini coefficient (r = .13). Statistically controlling for these variables did not reduce the original correlations.

More interestingly, the degree of progressive taxation was associated with higher levels of satisfaction with public and common goods (r = .54, p < .01). Finally, we showed that the association between progressive taxation and the subjective well-being of the nations was mediated (explained) by citizens? satisfaction with public and common goods. That is, the citizens of the nations with progressive taxation were more satisfied with public and common goods such as transportation, education, and clean water, and also satisfied with their lives in general and reported smiling, enjoying life, being well-rested, and doing something interesting on a daily basis.

Some readers might also wonder if our findings mean that the bigger the government, the better (another important political issue in the U.S.). We checked whether larger government (higher % of GDP spent on the government) was also associated with greater satisfaction with public and common goods and greater life satisfaction and well-being in general. To our surprise, that was NOT the case. The government spending as a percentage of GDP was NEGATIVELY associated with general life satisfaction (r = -.46) and daily positive experiences (r = -.45): the greater the government spending as a percentage of GDP, the LOWER citizens? life satisfaction and positive daily experiences were (FYI, the U.S. is relatively a ?small? government at this point, ranked #49 out of 73 nations in government spending per GDP).

So, the second observation from our analyses was that it is not the amount of government spending per se, but the progressive taxation that is associated with higher levels of well-being. I suspect that the greater spending is not always translated into better public or common goods, in part because some governments spend a lot of? money on public and common goods, but due to various factors (labor cost, pension, bribes, who knows?), that type of spending does not result in better roads, better transportation, better police, better housing or better education. For some reason, the nations with progressive taxation are doing better in the public and common goods department (the ?why? is an important future research question).

Going back to the presidential debate on taxation, I wish President Obama and Governor Romney debated about the tax policy in the context of citizens? happiness. There are relevant scientific data and findings here. When our paper was published in Psychological Science this January, a Japanese journalist from NHK (Japanese version of BBC) called and asked me ?Has your paper changed the discussion of the tax policy in Congress?? I must admit that was the most astonishing question that I have ever received from a journalist. I just laughed and said ?No way!? I bet no one on Capitol Hill has ever heard about our paper on taxation and happiness. I have never heard any politicians talk about our paper, let alone newspapers or news magazines seriously talking about our findings in the context of the presidential debate. ?I wish our paper had such an impact on real politics! Maybe someday?

The benefits of using a professional PR company

Sunday, 14th October 2012 - comments (0) Comment

As avid readers of Bath Mum?s you will know publicity is great for any business, it has the ability to reach a much wider audience than is possible on your own - and it can be a lot more affordable than you might think.

If you are thinking of setting up a new business or are small business keen to grow your customer base, fill your order books and get the phone ringing then using a PR Company may be well worth considering. It is a great way to generate awareness, sales and customers, usually at much less cost than conventional advertising.

Many people ask me ?How does PR Work?? One of my favourite examples is from a simple travel offer I managed to get published in the Mail on Sunday (at no cost) for a boutique hotel in Brighton. The hotel received 65 telephone calls as a result of the piece and made 10 bookings. But whilst every client and every solution is different the end objective is to be an effective link in the chain that generates customers.

Now a ?Bath Mum? it was in the back of my mind when I set up Crocodile PR. After a decade working in London PR consultancies we wanted to start a family and return to our roots in the West Country. Crocodile PR became my vehicle. I love being self-employed, it fits in really well with family life and I enjoy seeing my client?s companies grow as a result of our joint efforts.

Crocodile PR is made up of a network of freelance PR professionals based across the South West and in London. Each of us has their own area of expertise so we can tailor a service to ensure clients have the best media contacts to suit their enterprise - at affordable rates for a small business.

Good Reads: A lesson for democracy, lost and found on Google Earth, and the next Arab uprising

This week's good reads include words of wisdom from Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, using the Internet and applied mathematics to find the long road home, and a profile of Egyptian courage.

By Cricket Fuller,?Staff writer / October 12, 2012

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi (c.) leaves a branch office of her National League for Democracy party during her visit to Thone Gwa township in Yangon, Myanmar, Thursday, Oct. 11.

Larry Diamond writes in the Atlantic of the recent 17-day US tour by Myanmar (Burma) pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi ? the first since her release from house arrest in November 2010.

Mr. Diamond writes that Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi?s ?moral authority has grown through personal suffering and sacrifice? after decades of house arrest and persecution under the military junta in Myanmar, where a fledging democracy is now beginning to take hold.

But it is Aung San Suu Kyi?s ?spirit of pragmatism and dialogue? that holds a relevant lesson for American politics. As she told her fellow Burmese in the audience during her American tour, ?We must learn to compromise without regarding it as humiliation.?

When Aung San Suu Kyi was asked if she aspires to rule her country, Diamond noted that ?rather than shying away from politics, she embraced it. ?You should think of me as a political party leader. I was a politician before I was a ?democracy icon.? ?

Diamond concludes, ?At a time of rampant cynicism about parties and politicians in the United States, it is invigorating to have a ?democracy icon? remind us that politics can be a noble calling ? and an indispensable means for advancing the public good.?

Commentators have done plenty of hand-wringing over the Internet?s corrosive effects on civil society. But not to be neglected are the triumphs of the digital realm ? and its sometimes life-changing human impacts.

Vanity Fair?s David Kushner found one such story in the incredible saga of Saroo Brierley. As a 5-year-old in India, he was separated from his older brother at a train station, and through a series of dramatic turns, found himself lost among the poor and homeless on the streets of Calcutta. Taken in by an orphanage, he was eventually adopted by Australian parents.

Mr. Brierley adjusted well to his new life, but after graduating from college in 2009, he hit a rough patch: ?After years of ignoring his past, it finally came crashing back ? the desire to find his roots, and himself.?

Enter Google Earth. Brierley used the program?s satellite imagery to search for his home village in India ? whose geographic location and name he did not know. ?All he had was a laptop and some hazy memories, but Saroo was going to try.?

Study Suggests Exercise May Positively Effect Immune Systems of ...

Can exercising after finishing chemotherapy treatments help with efficacy? This weekend an important meeting in Colorado will discuss?

This weekend there is an important meeting of the minds in Westminster, Colorado. The Integrative Biology of Exercise VI meeting is a collaborative effort between the American Physiological Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.? The following article describes a recent study which looked at the effects of exercise on cancer patients (who exercised for several weeks) after chemotherapy treatment.

We are all affected by cancer.? It is exciting to see the effort on the part of various specialties? in the medical community coming together to study how exercise can have a positive impact on those recently treated with chemotherapy.? I have seen the positive effect first hand as my husband, James has gone through his treatments for cancer.? Even though extremely tired and lacking energy, James continued to exercise (mostly walking and a little running) throughout his chemotherapy and radiation treatments.? He continued to exercise after the treatments as much as he was able, and it seems obvious to me that this has been a real benefit to him.

I copied the article in its entirety here:

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Researchers may soon be able to add yet another item to the list of exercise?s well-documented health benefits: A preliminary study suggests that when cancer survivors exercise for several weeks after they finish chemotherapy, their immune systems remodel themselves to become more effective, potentially fending off future incidents of cancer. The finding may help explain why exercise can significantly reduce the chances of secondary cancers in survivors or reduce the chances of cancer altogether in people who have never had the disease.

Laura Bilek, Graham Sharp, and Geoffrey Thiele, all of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Daniel Shackelford, Colin Quinn, and Carole Schneider, all of Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute, analyzed T cells in the blood of cancer survivors before and after a 12-week exercise program. They found that a significant portion of these immune cells converted from a senescent form, which isn?t as effective at combating disease, to a na?ve form, ready to fight cancer and infections.

Their poster presentation entitled, ?Effect of Exercise on T Cells in Cancer Survivors,? will be discussed at The Integrative Biology of Exercise VI meeting being held October 10-13 at the Westin Westminster Hotel in Westminster, CO. This popular meeting is a collaborative effort between the American Physiological Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. The conference is supported in part by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, an institute of the National Institutes of Health, GlaxoSmithKline, Inc., Stealth Peptides, Inc., and Seahorse Biosciences.

Exercise and Immunity

Study leader Laura Bilek explains that previous research had turned up a variety of positive associations between exercise and cancer ? notably, that exercise can reduce the risk of getting initial incidence of several different types of cancers, can often improve prognosis in cancer patients, and can reduce the risk of recurrence and secondary cancers survivors of some types of cancers. However, the mechanism behind these phenomena has been unknown.

Since other research has suggested that exercise can remodel the immune system, making it more effective at fighting disease in general, Bilek and her colleagues decided to investigate how exercise affects the immune system of cancer patients. Working with a group of 16 cancer survivors, all but one of who recently finished chemotherapy cancer treatment, the researchers focused on T cells, a type of immune cell that attacks a variety of infectious agents as well as cancer cells. After chemotherapy, previous research had shown that the majority of T cells become senescent, with a decreased ability to fight infections and cancers. However, Bilek says, rebuilding the population of responsive (na?ve) T cells is critical for regaining normal immune function and cancer-fighting ability.

The researchers first took blood samples from each of the volunteers to examine how many senescent and na?ve T cells each had. Then, these study subjects were all enrolled into 12-week exercise programs at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute. All programs were individualized for the study participants, incorporating elements of cardiovascular exercise, strength and endurance training, and exercises for flexibility, posture, and balance, with extra emphasis in areas where participants were weak.

After the 12-week program, the researchers drew a second blood sample from each volunteer and ran the same T cell analysis.

Another Reason to Work Out Results showed that the ratio of senescent to na?ve T cells changed favorably in the majority of participants, with most of the study subjects regaining greater numbers of the na?ve variety.

?What we?re suggesting is that with exercise, you might be getting rid of T cells that aren?t helpful and making room for T cells that might be helpful,? Bilek says.

She adds that this finding highlights the importance of exercise for all, including those with cancer and cancer survivors. These two populations might benefit especially from the heightened ?cancer surveillance? ? the ability of the immune system to seek out and destroy budding cancers ? that this study suggests exercise brings, Bilek explains.

?There?s a litany of positive benefits from exercise,? Bilek says. ?If exercise indeed strengthens the immune system and potentially improves cancer surveillance, it?s one more thing we should educate patients about as a reason they should schedule regular activity throughout their day and make it a priority in their lives.?

Theater Review: 'Operetta's Greatest Hits' | Theatre | Arts ...

EVANSTON, Ill.?Light Opera Works brings majesty to the productions they stage. While they do not have the funding that the downtown and larger regional theaters have, they have creative minds, talent, and aspiring young performers.

The forte of Light Opera Works is operetta and musicals that come very close to qualifying as such. Their mission is to ?present musical theater from a variety of world traditions,? according to their website. This is what they do to perfection.

They just finished a spectacular Man of La Mancha; they also did a wonderful Camelot earlier in the year.

\>");

Operetta?s Greatest Hits, with a cast of six performers and four musicians, bring us some rather sterling examples of the operetta with music from Vienna, Paris, London, and Broadway.

The music of Jacques Offenbach, Emmerich K?lm?n, Richard Strauss, a medley from Franz Leh?r?s The Merry Widow, Gilbert and Sullivan (another medley), Rudolf Friml?s Indian Love Call, and much more are among the songs performed.

Directed by Rudy Hogenmiller in a chamber-like setting, I had no problem hearing every glorious word the performers sang. It seems that Hogenmiller and musical director Marta Johnson selected the pieces to reveal the growth of the operetta.

Hogenmiller uses some of his regulars who have thrilled many a main stage production audience: Alicia Berneche, Natalie Ford, James Rank, George Andrew Wolff, Colette Todd, and Matthew Giebel. All six have great audience appeal and vocal ranges that are sheer delight to the ears. They are also pleasing to look at as they banter with each other and the musicians.

This is a two-act, two-hour evening of what we could call a different type of easy listening, an evening that allows you to relax, take the hand of the date you brought, and just watch and listen to some history brought to life by the cast of Operetta?s Greatest Hits.

However, Uggs do feel comfortable on a day to day basis, which likely has a lot has to do Discount Vibram Five Fingers
with the warm, furry lining and overall soft feel. So, even with the immense amount of criticism Uggs have received for harming feet over the long run, Cheap Vibram FiveFingers

to your furry, comfortable - albeit unsupportive - footwear, you can remedy them to give you more support. To do so, simply remove the lining of your Uggs Discount UGGs
(they should be removable), and slide in an arch support insert - available at most chemists. Then slide your wool lining back over the arch support, and you've got yourself stylish, supportive footwear.
However, taking the criticism of Ugg boots into consideration, it's important to remember than many other shoe and footwear designs on the market are equally Cheap Vibram Five Fingers
unsupportive. So, it's vital that you pay attention to aspects like arch support when purchasing footwear. It's also worth having a look through your closet Vibram FiveFingers Sale
and remedying other footwear with arch support inserts, as you might have done to your Ugg boots.

Your feet work hard to carry you around - so it's worth taking good care of them. If you suspect that unsupportive footwear has already done some damage to your Vibram FiveFingers Outlet
feet, seek advice or treatment from a podiatrist. As an added note, remember that many comprehensive health insurance policies cover trips to the UGG Boots Sale
podiatrist - so if you're feet need care and attention, you can usually seek treatment knowing you're covered.

Strange cave-dwelling coral discovered in tropical reefs

A new species of coral has been discovered that clings to the ceilings of underwater caves in the western Pacific's Coral Triangle.

Able to tolerate low levels of light, the species lacks the symbiotic algae that most corals need to survive. The newfound species is related to deep-sea corals that survive in dark conditions below depths of 130 feet (40 meters), but so far, this species has been found no deeper than 115 feet (35 m), according to a description of the species published Thursday in the journal ZooKeys.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Next year, the committee behind the Nobel Prize for physics could have a huge Higgs hassle on its hands. And maybe that's a good thing.

    2. Complex brain goes back half a billion years
    3. Singing mice can change their tune
    4. How long can DNA last? A million years

The coral forms smaller polyps than its relatives and grows quite slowly, said study author Bert Hoeksema, a researcher at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands, in a statement.

Its range overlaps with the Coral Triangle, a region that's well-known for its high diversity of marine organisms. The species has been dubbed Leptoseris troglodyta. The word "troglodyte" is derived from ancient Greek and means "cave dweller."

Investigations into how the coral is able to survive without symbiotic bacteria could shed light on the relationship between the two species. This relationship is critical; when water temperatures increase ? as is happening in the world's oceans now ? many corals may expel their algae, in a process known as coral bleaching. This often leads to the coral's death.

Huge window switch recall hampers Toyota comeback

DETROIT (AP) ? The largest recall in Toyota's 75-year history could undermine the carmaker's comeback from natural disasters and embarrassing safety problems.

The company on Wednesday recalled 7.43 million cars, trucks and SUVs worldwide to fix faulty power window switches that can cause fires. The recall affects more than a dozen models produced from 2005 through 2010 around the world including the Camry, the top-selling car in the U.S. It's bigger than the 7 million vehicles recalled two years ago for floor mats that can trap accelerator pedals and cause unintended acceleration.

The problem centers on the power window switch, which is inside the driver's door and controls when a window is opened or closed. Toyota said grease wasn't applied evenly to the switch during production, causing friction and sometimes smoke and fire.

The flaw raises questions about whether Toyota Motor Corp. has solved quality and safety issues that embarrassed the company in 2009 and 2010. It also could jeopardize Toyota's impressive rebound from last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Those disasters hobbled factories and left dealers short of models to sell.

The Toyota recall "takes some of the sheen off its recovering brand image and should have a financial impact," Standard & Poor's analyst Efraim Levy wrote in a note to investors. Toyota's U.S. shares fell $1.60, or 2.1 percent, to $74.46 Wednesday afternoon.

Toyota said initially the window switch problem hasn't caused any crashes or injuries. But documents filed by U.S. safety regulators show customers have reported 161 fires and nine injuries. No deaths have occurred.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began looking into window switch problems with two Toyota models in February after noticing a higher than normal number of complaints. Most fires caused by the window switch were minor, although a Camry was destroyed in one case. Several owners reported that they were afraid to drive their vehicles because of the threat of fires. NHTSA said Wednesday the investigation remains open pending a review of recall documents.

Toyota said Wednesday it has received more than 200 complaints about the switches in the U.S., and more from other countries including 39 in Japan. Most of the complaints were about a sticky feel to the switches while pushing the button to move the window up or down, but there also were complaints of the smell of smoke, company spokesman John Hanson said.

Toyota dealers will inspect the switches and apply a special grease to them. In some cases the switches and circuit boards could be replaced, Hanson said. Some repair shops might have used off-the-shelf greases to fix the problem, but those eventually will make it worse, he said.

The recall includes 2.5 million vehicles in the U.S., where it covers about half the models sold under the Toyota and Scion brands.

Recalled U.S. models include the 2007 to 2009 Camry, Tundra pickup and RAV4 small SUV; the 2007 and 2008 Yaris subcompact; the 2008 and 2009 Sequoia large SUV and Scion xD and xA small cars; the 2008 Highlander SUV; and the 2009 Corolla and Matrix compacts.

Hanson said he was not sure if the recall will hurt Toyota's sales, which have come roaring back in the U.S. after production recovered from the earthquake.

Through September, Toyota sales were up nearly 32 percent compared with a year earlier, more than double the growth of the U.S. industry. Toyota also reclaimed the title of the world's top-selling automaker during the first half of this year, wresting the crown from General Motors Co. Toyota sold 4.97 million vehicles globally in the first half, beating GM by about 300,000.

Analysts said it's too early to tell whether such a large recall will hurt Toyota's sales. S&P's Levy, who downgraded Toyota stock from "Buy" to "Hold," wrote that he hasn't quantified the financial impact.

If Toyota makes its customers feel like they are being cared for properly as the repairs are done, there probably won't be much of an impact, said Mike Jackson, director of North American production forecasting for IHS Automotive, an industry consulting firm.

"There's a tremendous amount of loyalty to the Toyota brand," he said. "Certainly it's not going to be the primary point of consideration for most consumers out there."

The window switch recall also highlights one of the risks of globalized car production: Automakers install the same parts on multiple models in different counties, saving money but exposing their lineups to big recalls if a part is flawed.

Toyota said it quickly identified all the models using the problem switches and took action. "We want to make sure that we addressed this issue quickly and effectively, and I think we are doing that with this recall," Hanson said.

The recall covers only the master power window switch on the driver's side, which controls all four windows. Switches inside the other doors are different, Toyota said.

Before the safety recalls two years ago, Toyota had a reputation for pristine quality, centered around its super-lean production methods that empowered workers to hone in on quality control. Toyota executives have acknowledged the escalating recalls were partly caused by the company's overly ambitious growth goals.

Toyota is also suffering from a sales plunge in China where car buyers are shunning Japanese brands because of a territorial dispute over islands claimed by Japan, China and Taiwan.

The Committee's interim safety analysis found no evidence of such toxicity and accordingly the study is continuing.

The NX03-0040 study tests both low and high doses of NX-1207 for their effect on low grade localized prostate cancer. The NX-1207 dose is administered directly into the area of the prostate where the cancer was detected. The procedure is performed by a urologist in an office setting, does not require anaesthesia, sedation, or catheterization, takes only a few minutes and involves minimal discomfort to the patient. Patients in the study are randomly allocated to either low or high dose NX-1207 or to active surveillance (no treatment). Patients undergoing active surveillance in the trial also have the opportunity to receive NX-1207 after their trial active surveillance participation is completed.

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2012 more than 240,000 men in the United States will be newly diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 28,000 men will die from the disease. Most cases are detected via prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening and usually found to have localized tumors. Surgical removal of the prostate (radical prostatectomy) and radiation therapy with or without androgen deprivation therapy are the most common active treatment options for localized prostate cancer but have significant short-and long-term adverse effects, including impotence, urinary dysfunction, and other complications.

NX-1207 is in late stage Phase 3 development in the U.S. for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition of older men associated with growth in prostate size as men age. Phase 3 trial activities of NX-1207 for BPH have recently begun in Europe sponsored by Recordati S.p.A., the company's European licensing partner. In the BPH studies to date, a single dose of NX-1207 has been found to produce symptomatic improvements about double that reported for currently approved BPH drugs without causing the sexual or cardiovascular side effects associated with those drugs.

BPH causes progressive difficulties with urination, such as nocturia, urge to void frequently, acute urinary retention and other problems. The condition can seriously impact the health and quality of life of middle aged and older men. It is estimated that 50% of men in their 50s have pathological signs of prostatic hyperplasia and a high proportion of men as they age suffer from moderate to severe urinary problems and symptoms associated with BPH.
